The Portuguese regulatory body, SRIJ, has implemented a new regulation that forbids the display of live sports betting probabilities online or at sporting locations.
This regulation, designated as No. 1/2022/SRIJ, took effect on March 18th and prohibits operators from showcasing live odds for games on any platform, including digital displays within stadiums and arenas.
SRIJ has declared that any odds presented with real-time updates will be deemed unlawful advertising, and operators could face disciplinary measures.
This new rule follows the Portuguese legislative body’s unanimous approval of a proposal last October aimed at curbing gambling promotions.
Portugal’s decision to ban live odds mirrors similar rules in other European nations, including the Netherlands, where laws restrict advertising during sporting events to deter impulsive betting by participants.
Last month, the Dutch gambling authority, Kansspelautoriteit, issued a caution to a licensed operator for posting advertisements on the social media platform Twitter during a football match.
The unnamed operator shared match updates on Twitter, referencing odds in some posts and providing direct links to its website where consumers could wager on the game.
