The chief executive of Illinois has reinstated online sports wagering registration.
Residents of Illinois can now register for online sports betting accounts without physically visiting a gambling establishment, thanks to Governor J.B. Pritzker. He has reinstated a regulation that allowed individuals to register online, which had been suspended.
This new regulation will come into effect on September 19th. It was initially implemented on June 4th to provide support to individuals during the COVID-19 outbreak. Gambling venues were forced to close, preventing people from registering in person.
The regulation was intended to remain in effect until the governor lifted his emergency directives, but he did not immediately reinstate it when casinos reopened in July.
In-person registration would be a boon for online sports betting firms collaborating with physical stores in the Chicago region, such as PointsBet. Conversely, other firms, including DraftKings, are experiencing a notable decrease in customer activity in more distant locations.
However, with the resurgence of COVID-19 cases resulting in new operating time restrictions in the broader East St. Louis region of Illinois (including DraftKings’ Casino Queen sportsbook in the St. Louis metropolitan area), bettors will once again be able to sign up online.
